The “beauty” of agriculture

We often say that agricultural science is one of the most challenging. We are dependent on various external factors, which condition us at different times.

If the problem in summer is excess heat and lack of water, winter is even worse, at least for us. We're entering the most complex production phase; the cold, excess water and lack of solar radiation mean that all the plants we have in the ground take three times as long to grow, sometimes even longer.

We have to bear in mind that not only do all plants have a minimum temperature at which they can grow (after a certain point, development stops), but that excess rain floods the soil, saturates the roots and prevents them from absorbing nutrients.

The soil needs to be minimally aerated so that this “exchange” can take place. This exchange becomes even more complex when the soil has poor drainage conditions. However, we could be “helped” by the sun 😅, particularly by the phenomenon of evaporation, but winter and the sun never go hand in hand and this results in extended periods of waterlogging.

During this period, it's crucial to preserve plants that have been cultivated for longer and protect them as much as possible from these adverse conditions, especially frost.

Todos os anos vemos inúmeros agricultores a sofrerem com a geada, principalmente aquelas que são tardias, as de março. Quem produz ao ar livre no inverno, como nós fazemos, tem de estar preparado para perdas relevantes. Entre todo o processo associado ao cuidado das plantas temos de juntar uma parte significativa nesta fase do ano, a cobertura das plantas. Faz-se com mantas térmicas e é um processo essencial para o bem-estar de algumas variedades, principalmente aquelas que são sensíveis e que simplesmente morrem sem o nosso auxílio.

O segredo está numa plantação precoce e na manutenção destas plantas nesta fase, pois sabemos que cultivar entre Novembro e Fevereiro simplesmente não faz sentido.

Em meados de Fevereiro voltamos a plantar mas estas culturas só ficam disponíveis no ínicio de Abril.

Tentamos sempre ser o mais fiéis possível ao nosso conceito, de disponibilizar nos nossos cabazes apenas os nossos legumes, mas nem sempre é possível e vai estar sempre estar dependente da severidade do clima.
